Sculpture Competition Applicants!
You must understand these guidelines & Expectations before applying
Dimension Requirements
Large Category — 6’ W x 6’ L x 10’ H
Small Category — 3’ W x 3’ L x 5’ H (this is a new change this year!)
If you make a kinetic sculpture (a sculpture that moves), it must be within the dimension requirements at its initial resting state. While moving it can go a foot or two outside of the dimension requirements.
If your sculpture does not meet the dimension requirements, you will be disqualified from the competition, but can still display your sculpture at the festival and participate in the auction.
Stability Requirements
If we find that your sculpture isn’t structurally stable at Drop-off Day, you will be disqualified from the competition and we cannot display your sculpture at the festival.
You will have an option to add a base (approx 36” x 36”) that is not included in the amount of scrap material you can collect on Collection Day. You can fabricate it however you like and you can use any remaining scrap from it in your sculpture.
You can use new fasteners (e.g. nuts and bolts) for structural integrity, but they cannot be used for aesthetic/design purposes.
Transportation requirements and Being On Time
By applying to ScrapFest, you are agreeing to all of the transportation requirements involved. Please be on time for all of them. Failure to do so will disqualify you from the competition. If you can’t meet a transportation and time requirement, you must find someone who can. If you can’t find someone, let us know and we will try to connect you with someone who can help.
Collection Day: Saturday May 3, 2025 at Friedland Industries, 9:30am ET Registration, 10am ET Collection
Drop-off Day: Saturday May 31, 2025 at Struk Studio, 9am - 12pm time window (you can arrange to drop off at an earlier date/time if need be)
Festival Weekend: Friday July 11, 2025 at Struk Studio, 9am - 12pm time window to pick up your sculpture and take it to the festival location (in the middle of Old Town Lansing, ~5min from Struk Studio). Saturday July 12, 2025 in Old Town Lansing, 7pm - 9pm time window to take your sculpture away from the festival premises (either to the buyer’s location if your sculpture sells, or your place of storage if it doesn’t sell).
Note: If your sculpture doesn’t sell during the festival, we can connect you with local galleries so you can see if they are interested in partnering with you, but we cannot guarantee that they will, so you need to have a plan of storage if your sculpture doesn’t sell at the festival.
Expectations
While ScrapFest is a competition, it often doesn’t feel that way. The artists who participate tend to have a your success is my success, my success is your success mindset. You’ll regularly see artists helping each other with their sculptures. This mindset is what makes ScrapFest so special. In our experience, the people who enjoy participating in ScrapFest the most do so because they want to meet new people, and while they want to win, they look forward to connecting with other artists in a positive environment. This is one of the key things that push all of the artists to grow each year.
Ownership of the Sculpture
Leading up to and through the duration of ScrapFest, as well as for 30 days after the festival, ScrapFest will retain ownership of the sculpture. We made this change last year for a couple of reasons, but mainly for insurance purposes (e.g. if the sculpture is damaged during the festival, our insurance can cover it). On the 31st day after the festival, ownership is transferred to the artist.
If your sculpture sells within the 30-day period after the festival, it will still be held to the proceeds breakdown (70% to the artist, 20% to ScrapFest, 10% to our local charity partner for the year). If it sells after the 30-day period, we will not hold you to the breakdown, but we certainly appreciate it if you’re willing to do it. We know you put a lot of time and effort into making your sculptures, and you’re also storing it after the festival if it doesn’t sell. We also put a lot of time and effort into making ScrapFest happen, so any help is much appreciated.
Zero Discrimination Policy
We have a zero discrimination policy at ScrapFest. If we find that your sculpture (or your conduct) is discriminatory in any way, you will be disqualified from both the competition and the festival as a whole. If you have an idea for a sculpture and you aren’t sure whether it will be appropriate, please email Mike Bass (mike@scrapfest.com) or Heather Muylle-Mossing (heather@scrapfest.com), and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you.
